bibi aisha (18-year-old woman from oruzgan province, afghanistan)
fled back to her family home from her husband’s house, complaining of violent treatment. the taliban arrived one night, demanding bibi be handed over to face justice. after a taliban commander pronounced his verdict, bibi’s brother-in-law held her down and her husband sliced off her ears and then cut off her nose. bibi was abandoned, but later rescued by aid workers and the u.s. military. after time in a women’s refuge in kabul, she was taken to america, where she received counseling and reconstructive surgery. bibi aisha now lives in the usa.

left: najaf sultana, 16. at the age of 5 was burned by her father while she was sleeping, apparently because he didn’t want to have another girl in the family. as a result of the burning najaf became blind and after being abandoned by both her parents she now lives with relatives. she has undergone plastic surgery around 15 times to try to recover from her scars.
right: kanwal kayum, 26. she was burned with acid 1 year ago by a boy whom she rejected for marriage. she has never undergone plastic surgery.

march 1st: people in india and other countries with large hindu populations celebrated holi, the festival of colors.
men and women take part in “huranga” in dauji temple near the northern indian city of mathura march 2, 2010. huranga is a game played between men and women a day after holi, during which men drench women with liquid colors and women tear off the clothes of the men.
