song: twinkle twinkle little star
album: dead space 2 original score
2011
it’s a popular english nursery rhyme. the lyrics are from an early nineteenth-century english poem, “the star” by jane taylor. the poem, which is in couplet form, was first published in 1806 in rhymes for the nursery, a collection of poems by taylor and her sister ann.
twinkle, twinkle, little star,
how i wonder what you are.
up above the world so high,
like a diamond in the sky.
when the blazing sun is gone,
when he nothing shines upon,
then you show your little light,
twinkle, twinkle, all the night.
then the traveller in the dark,
thanks you for your little spark,
he could not see which way to go,
if you did not twinkle so.
as your bright and tiny spark,
lights the traveller in the dark.
though i know not what you are,
twinkle, twinkle, little star.

song: singin’ in the rain
album: a clockwork orange soundtrack
artist: gene kelly
usa - 1952
+: lyrics by arthur freed and music by nacio herb brown, published in 1929. it is unclear exactly when the song was written with some claiming that the song was written and performed as early as 1927.
was first performed by doris eaton travis in the 1929. the song became a hit and was recorded by a number of artists: cliff edwards, annette hanshaw, jimmy durante, judy garland, amongst many others. an instrumental version was used as background music at the beginning of mgm’s 1930 “the divorcee” staring norma shearer.
the song is probably best known today as the centerpiece of the 1952 musical film singin’ in the rain, in which gene kelly memorably danced to the song while splashing through puddles during a rainstorm. the song is also performed during the opening credits of the film.
the song was subsequently featured in stanley kubrick’s film a clockwork orange, in which alex delarge sang it while raping a woman. the song is also played over the closing credits.

the social network score:
“i was planning on taking some time off after the continual waves of touring that ended last fall and spend this year experimenting around with what would become how to destroy angels and some new nin. well, that plan didn’t work out so well. david fincher started inquiring about my interest in scoring his upcoming film, the social network. yeah, the movie about the founding of facebook. i’ve always loved david’s work but quite honestly i wondered what would draw him to tell that story. when i actually read the script and realized what he was up to, i said goodbye to that free time i had planned. atticus ross and i have been on a creative roll so i asked him if he wanted to work on this with me and we signed on.
months later, i’m happy to tell you we’re nearing the completion of this and i couldn’t be happier with how it’s turned out. the level of excellence that david operates on is inspiring and the entire process has been challenging and truly enjoyable.
as atticus and i near the end of the scoring process, we’re looking forward to the next phase - distilling the large amount of music we’ve written for this down to a satisfying record (or two). the film opens oct 1 in the us with the record likely available a couple of weeks ahead of that.
speaking of the film… it’s really fucking good. and dark!”

“george orwell’s novel of a totalitarian future society in which a man whose daily work is rewriting history tries to rebel by falling in love.”
drama/romance/sci-fi/thriller

1984
john hurt as winston smith
richard burton as o’brien
some facts:
- scenes were shot on the actual days noted in winston smith’s diary (the scene where smith writes in his diary, dating the entry april 4, 1984, was shot on april 4, 1984).
- richard burton was 4th choice for his role. paul scofield, sean connery and anthony hopkins were also considered.
- this film was dedicated to the memory of richard burton.
- virgin films, the production company bankrolling the movie, had wanted a commercially viable pop act to compose the music for the film to increase its market potential. originally they approached david bowie, who had used orwell’s novel as inspiration for some songs on his 1974 album, “diamond dogs”, but he demanded too much money for the job. they opted instead for eurhytmics, who had initially turned down the offer but later accepted.
- the film features a salute which never was used in the novel. it is done by holding one’s arms up and making the wrists cross each other in the shape of a small v. a similar salute is seen in the film, pink floyd the wall (1982).
- the oceanian soldiers in the film are wearing soviet red army helmets, painted black.
- in the film adaptation of v for vendetta (2005), john hurt played the high chancellor adam sutler, who appeared big-brother-like on a massive television screen in several scenes.
- in the film, inner and outer party members call each other “brother” or “sister” instead of “comrade” like in the novel.
- mrs. orwell appalled when david bowie proposed turning “nineteen eighty-four” into a rock musical in the mid-1970s.

oh it’s a mystery to me.
we have a greed, with which we have agreed…
and you think you have to want more than you need…
until you have it all, you won’t be free.
when you want more than you have, you think you need…
and when you think more than you want, your thoughts begin to bleed.
i think I need to find a bigger place…
cause when you have more than you think, you need more space.
y no, no soy hippie.
